This photo is from Ferry Field on the University of Michigan campus in 1950. The photographer was covering the Michigan Marching Band and was wandering around getting candid shots when he watched a group of children run after the rehearsing drum major and start imitating him. Brazilians like to say that they run into each other in every part of the world, so it’s safe to assume that, with nearly 1500 student organizations at the University of Michigan (U-M), there would be a Brazilian group on campus. And there is. But, after its founding members graduated and left the university about 7 years ago, the Brazilian Student Association (BSA) became inactive for a while. “The people who were organizing it went home and sort of ended the association because there weren’t enough members,” said Fernando Schnaidman, current president of BSA.
Around two years ago, a newly arrived wave of Brazilian students decided to bring the organization back to life. It has been growing since then and now has almost 70 members in its Facebook group [closed to members only]. “Our main role is to be a home for Brazilians,” said Fernando, a junior in industrial and operations engineering at U-M originally from the city of São Paulo. “The other is to promote the Brazilian culture on campus,” he added.
Legend has it that every morning University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman spins The Cube to get the day started. Finally, we’ve captured it on video for the world to see. — Produced by student group, and former #UMSocial interns, Filmic Productions (on Twitter #filmicprods).
For all those diehard Maize and Blue fans... this blog is for everything that makes Michigan great, from the crowds of 107, 501 to the individuals that make it great to be a Michigan Wolverine.
